What to Do When Told to Evacuate
Evacuation normally would be ordered only if large amounts of radioactive materials are expected to escape over a long period of time. Evacuation would most likely be directed only as a precaution. In the unlikely event that an emergency evacuation is required, special instructions will be given on your EAS radio and television stations. When evacuation is ordered as a safety measure, remain calm. There is adequate time for an orderly response. You are far more likely to be hurt acting in unnecessary haste than you are by radiation.
1. Take clothing, toilet articles, necessary medications, important papers and valuables (money, credit cards, jewelry, etc.). You may also have use for other supplies such as sleeping bags, a portable radio, flashlight and batteries.
2. Before leaving your home, shut off water, gas, lights and appliances. Lock all doors and windows.
3. Shelter pets and livestock, providing them with food and water where possible. Inform personnel at the Evacuation Assembly Center that pets or livestock are at your residence.
4. Assist friends and neighbors without transportation.
If you do not have your own transportation, make plans to ride with a neighbor. Let the local
Coordinator of Emergency Services/Emergency Management Official know now if you do not have transportation so that it can be furnished for you and your family.
5. If there has been a radiological release, when evacuating, keep car windows and vents closed and air conditioners turned off.
6. Proceed directly to your local designated Evacuation Assembly Center.
Where to Go When Told to Evacuate
Local government officials will designate Evacuation Assembly Centers. The population will be instructed on where to go and the best routes to leave the area. The evacuation routes provide directions to exit the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zones. Law enforcement and traffic control personnel will be dispatched to predetermined locations along evacuation routes. These individuals will direct you out of the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone and to the nearest Evacuation Assembly Center. If an evacuation is recommended, drive to the Evacuation Assembly Center for your protective action zone. Listen to your local EAS radio station in your vehicle for any changes. Adhere to the speed limits on the highways.
