Outline:

Introduction

The smoke alarm lives high on the wall or ceiling and sniffs for smoke.  Let them hear the smoke alarm, but tell them to cover their ears first!

When you hear the smoke alarm go off, it’s time to GET OUT AND STAY OUT –students say it with you.

Don’t go back inside for favorite toy, jeans, shoes, etc.  Reinforce GET OUT & STAY OUT throughout the rest of the message.

Sometimes it’s really smoky – make face, icky smoke.  Pretend the smoke alarm is going off, make the students stand, take big breath of smoke & cough.

So, to fix that, we “Stay Low & Go”.  Important to crawl hands & knees, NOT on your belly (bad toxins 6-8” from floor) – just say so you can get out faster.  Crawl quickly.  Let them practice IF the teacher says ok, let teacher direct how.

It can be dark & scary in a fire (hand over eyes).  You can’t see much.  Some children think they can hide from the fire.  Can we?  NOOO.  NEVER hide from fire.  If you ever get scared, remember “Don’t hide, go outside”!  Get children to say this several times.  Sometimes the firefighters may look different because of the special clothes we wear to keep us safe. Remember, DON’T HIDE, GO OUTSIDE!
