County of James City Government
James City County is divided into five election districts, each of which is represented by a supervisor who serves on the governing board for a period of four years. Supervisors are elected by the voters in each district. Current terms are staggered with representatives from Roberts, Stonehouse, and Berkeley Districts being elected in one year and representatives from Powhatan and Jamestown Districts being elected two years later.
The Board of Supervisors enacts ordinances, establishes policies, and sets tax rates.
It appoints a County Administrator, to carry out the day-to-day operationsm appropriates funds, and generally oversees the operation of the County government. In addition, appoints most County boards and commission members.
The James City County Board of Supervisors meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, except in August and December when it meets only once.
The regular meetings begin at 7 p.m. when at least three of the five Board members are present to constitute a quorum.
The work sessions are open to the public and are held on the afternoon of the fourth Tuesday of the month, except for August and December. These sessions begin at 4 p.m. Meetings are held in the Board Room in Building F of the Government Complex located at 101 Mounts Bay Road, unless otherwise announced. Board meetings are broadcast live on County Channel JCC TV48.
Meetings and Work Sessions will be rebroadcast on Public Access Channel 46 every Thursday. Rebroadcasts will be at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
