General Information

State Levy increases from 1.75 percent to 2.00 percent effective July 1, 2009.

Good morning. There are 138 new inspections called in for today, Thursday, July 02, 2009. This is the heaviest load we have experienced in some time. Joe Basilone is not in today. All inspectors will be required in the field. It is highly probable that we will have some leftover inspections that will have to carry forward to Monday. Keep in mind that we will be closed tomorrow for the Independence Day holiday. Have a nice day and a safe holiday.

NEW HOMES PERMITTED UNDER THE 2006 IRC MUST DISPLAY AN ENERGY CONSERVATION CERTIFICATE ON OR NEAR THE ELECTRICAL PANEL. WHILE THIS IS ON OR NEAR THE ELECTRICAL PANEL, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR TO INSURE IT IS DISPLAYED, NOT THE ELECTRICIAN. THIS STICKER WILL BE CHECKED ON THE FINAL BUILDING INSPECTION. The energy conservation aspect of these codes requires R-38 in the overhead. R-13 in the walls. R-19 in the floors continues to be acceptable.

We will be closed on Friday, July third, to celebrate Independence Day, July 4.

The Uniform Statewide Building Code ( USBC) is in large part an administrative document that adopts and references the 2006 International Codes and the National Electrical Code. The current edition of the USBC took effect on May 1, 2008. Go to http://www.vbcoa.org. and scroll down to Virginia Construction Code to read the USBC.

Elevator inspections are required for new construction and annually for existing buildings. Recently, Allen Turner, Senior Electrical Inspector, became a certified elevator inspector.  As required by this office in the past, using a private sector certified elevator inspector will remain an option for any existing building. Beginning March 10, 2009, Code Compliance can now also offer the inspection service. New elevators in existing or new buildings must have their first inspection conducted by the JCC Inspector, Allen Turner.

These fees, which do not include the state levy,  are as follows:

Annual elevator inspections requested to be conducted by a JCC inspector (Allen)

-          $150 for a Hydraulic Elevator

-          $200 for a Traction Elevator

Annual inspections performed by a 3rd party inspector (The building owner must pay the 3rd party inspector directly)

-          $50

Once the inspection by our inspector or the 3rd party inspector has passed, an annual elevator inspection certificate can be issued. If you have questions about this, please contact Allen Turner at (757) 253-6629.
