Mechanical Permit Procedure
- Who should file for a mechanical permit? Mechanical permits should be applied for by the subcontractor performing the work. However the homeowner or property owner may obtain the permit, but this is not recommended if a contractor has been hired.
- What do I need to get a mechanical permit? When completing an Accessory Application, provide the general information:
- contractor name
- property owner name
- project address
- a description of the work being performed
- What if I have a commercial project? Detailed drawings may be required if the project is commercial or complex in nature.
- Is there a permit fee? Yes. The Board of Supervisors determined the fee schedule. A fee schedule is available from the Code Compliance Division, or the Citizens Assistance Office, or at this website.
- What if I want to install liquid propane or natural gas? If you are installing liquid propane or natural gas and your property utilizes well and/or septic, a copy a Health Department approval report is required to be submitted.
Mechanical and Gas Permit Fees
The minimum fee for any mechanical or gas permit is $50.00, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy.
- Basic permit fee is as follows:
First $1,000 value $50.00 Over $1,000 value $50.00, plus $5 per $1,000 or fraction thereof (a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - For the replacement, repair or alteration of mechanical systems or equipment in existing buildings, structures or additions thereto the fee is as follows:
First $1,000 value $50.00 Over $1,000 value $50.00, plus $5 per $1,000 or fraction thereof (a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - EXCEPTIONS: Domestic cooking equipment and space heaters in dwelling units are exempt from mechanical permit fees. Inspections of this equipment are required.
- L.P.G. (i.e., butane, propane, etc.) tanks and associated piping permit fee (total water capacity in gallons):
0-500$50.00501-2,000$50.00Over 2,000$50.00, plus $1.00 per 10,000 gallons(a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - Tanks and associated piping for flammable liquids permit fee (capacity in gallons):
0-10,000 $50.00 10,001-20,000 $55.00 20,001-50,000 $60.00 Over 50,000 $70.00, plus $5 per 25,000 gallons or fraction thereof (a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - For the removal of storage tanks, the minimum fee is $50.00, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy.
- For fire suppression systems, the permit fee is (includes standpipes):
New construction: First $1,000 value $50.00 All others: Over $1,000 value $50.00, plus $5 per $1,000 or fraction thereof (a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - Elevators, dumbwaiters, moving stairways, moving walks, man lifts or special hoisting and conveying equipment permit fee:
New construction: First $1,000 value $50.00 All others: Over $1,000 value $50.00, plus $5 per $1,000 or fraction thereof (a 1.75 percent State levy is added to the above). - Permit reissuance fee: Permits becoming invalid, as specified by the Code, may be reissued and charged a fee of $15.00, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy, for each six-month period.
- Fuel piping permit fee: 0.005 x $1,000 of valuation or fraction thereof, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy. Note: Fee applies when permit is issued for fuel piping work only.
Refunds
No fee paid for any permit covered under Section 4-8 of the Code shall be refunded unless the permit application is denied and a permit is not issued or the permit is issued in error. If a permit is revoked, abandoned or the project for which the permit is obtained is discontinued, a portion of the permit fee may be refunded after deducting $25.00, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy, for administrative costs plus $15.00, plus the addition of a 1.75 percent State levy, for each normal inspection that has been made. No permit fee, the value of which is $25.00 or less, will be refunded.
Exemptions
Where the owner of any premises is the United States of America, the commonwealth, the county or instrumentalities thereof, the payment of any permit fee established in Section 4-8 of the Code is hereby waived. When the Housing and Community Development Administrator certifies that the work for which application has been made is funded through his office or a related program and requests that fees be waived, then the request shall be granted
