Historical Commission

Norge DepotThe mission of the Historical Commission is to further the efforts of the County to document, commemorate, preserve, protect, and promote the rich historical heritage of James City County.

In honor of the 375th anniversary of James City County, the Historical Commission is pleased to present a series of free talks on several aspects of our rich history.

Monday, June 1- 7 p.m. Legacy Hall in New Town
Lafayette Jones will speak about his recently published book entitled My Great, Great Grandfather’s Journey.  The book traces the path of the enslaved and free African Americans from Africa to the institution of slavery and freedom in Williamsburg-James City County.  Mr. Jones has also been involved in the initial planning with James City County for the development and design of Freedom Park, where a portion of the original free black settlement was located.

Saturday, June 27- 10:30 a.m. James City County Fair
Sara Lewis will discuss her latest book entitled Images of America – James City County. This book is an excellent collection of images from the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries of people and places in our county. Many of these images are being seen publicly for the first time and document a time period often overlooked in our vast history.
