Concealed Handgun Permits

 

Any person 21 years of age or older may apply to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County or City in which he or she resides for a five-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

An application for a concealed handgun permit may be obtained from the Circuit Court Clerk's Office. You may also view, download and/or print the form (SP-248 Application for Concealed Handgun Permit) from the Virginia State Police web site www.vsp.state.va.us.

 

Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 18.2-308, subsection G, the Williamsburg-James City County requires proof that the applicant for a permit to carry a concealed handgun demonstrates competence with a handgun. An applicant may demonstrate competence by one of the following:

 

  1. Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency or another state;
  2. Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
  3. Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;
  4. Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
  5. Presenting evidence or equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;
  6. Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;
  7. Completing any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor; or
  8. Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

 

Where to file, process time, costs and permit renewal information:

 

The fee for a concealed handgun permit is $50.00. You will pay the fee at the Circuit Court Clerk's Office when you turn in your application. If this is your first time applying for a permit, after paying your fee; you will need to turn your application into the Sheriff's Office and be fingerprinted. An application is normally processed within six weeks from the date it is received. Your permit will mailed to you by the Circuit Court Clerk's Office when your application has been approved. If you are picking up a permit for someone else, you will need a notarized statement from that person requesting that you pick up their permit for them and you will need to bring a picture ID.


 The renewal fee is also $50.00.

 

Lost Permit Card:

If you lose your permit card, you must complete a Request for Duplicate Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun form. The form is signed, under oath verifying that you are still eligible to carry a concealed handgun.

 

This form may be obtained from the Circuit Court Clerk's Office. Your permit will be mailed to you once approved. There is a $14.00 fee for a duplicate card.
