Messages and Events Effective October 24:  Please note that before accepting applications for Land Disturbing Permits, County staff will verify that all real estate taxes owed for the subject properties have been paid in full in accordance with Section 24-24.  The certification can be completed by staff while you wait.  If it is found that real estate taxes have not been paid, the application will not be accepted.  If you are unsure if your payments are up-to-date, please contact the County Treasurer at 757-253-6705.  If you have questions about this requirement, please contact our office at 757-253-6670.

Streetlight Information for Developers

Most streetlights in James City County are installed by the developer during the development process.  Streetlights within new nonresidential developments shall be installed by the developer in accordance with the requirements of the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances.

 

Requests by citizens to have the County participate in streetlight installations are handled by General Services.

 

Streetlight Standards

A. Residential Areas

  1. Light size - 5,000 lumens
  2. Distance between lights 300-400 feet
  3. Maximum number of lights in a subdivision shall not exceed one light per three lots
  4. Each light shall be on the right-of-way of a public street
  5. A light shall be placed at all intersections and in all cul-de-sacs.

B. Nonresidential light standards shall be established in the individual streetlight plans for these areas.  Standards shall be coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation standards for roadway lighting.  Each light shall be on the right-of-way of a public street.
