Bike Team
One of the newest innovations within James City County Fire Department is the EMS Bike Team. The team's primary goal is to provide Emergency Medical coverage during public events and in places where an ambulance would have limited access. The team is has also shown to be an effective way to promote safe bicycle riding and injury prevention to the public.
Each member must attend a 16-hour bicycle training class which covers subjects ranging from riding in traffic to slow speed techniques. A 12-mile timed ride is also required to insure that members have the fitness and endurance for this type of duty.
When the EMS Bike Team is deployed to an event or other situation, a minimum of one Advanced Life Support provider and one Basic Life Support provider form the unit. The normal duty shift could last 2 to 6 hours with the occasional night operation. Examples of the types of events the Bike Team covers include, the Michelob Golf Championship, County Fair, running marathons, and other large outdoor events as needed or requested.
