Emergency Communications Center
The James City County Emergency Communications Center is staffed with a total of 23 Emergency Communications Officers which provide 24-hour coverage for emergency calls for Police, Fire and EMS requests in James City County. The Center also takes emergency calls for Animal Control and the James City Service Authority (JCSA) after normal business hours. The Emergency Communications Officers are responsible for monitoring the Surry Nuclear Power Plant Warning System as well as other Virginia emergency warning systems and notifying the appropriate emergency services staff personnel as required.
Emergency Communications Officers receive extensive training in radio procedures, emergency call-taking and standard operating procedures for all agencies for which services are provided. In addition, they must become certified with the Commonwealth of Virginia by attending a week long academy provided by the Hampton Roads Regional Academy of Criminal Justice. There, training includes but is not limited to, receiving and disseminating emergency and non emergency calls. Emergency Communications Officers must be certified in the operation and conform to the regulations surrounding sensitive and confidential information provided by and through the Virginia Criminal Information Network and the National Criminal Information Network. Emergency Communications Officers ride along with Police and Fire units to enhance their knowledge of field operations.
