Do I have to take all the classes?
Yes, however if you have to miss a class or two, you can make up those classes during the following CERT class cycle.
I heard I can make up classes at another jurisdiction. Is that possible? If another locality will allow you to take a specific class or two, yes.
There isn’t a CERT team in my neighborhood. Is it worth my time to take this class? Yes! One of the primary purposes of CERT is personal preparedness. We can also help you with efforts to create a CERT team in your neighborhood.
Can I still take CERT if I have physical limitations? Yes! CERT is an “all abilities” program. There is something for everyone to learn and do.
What is CERT? The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a national program which started over 20 years ago in California. Many people tried to help family members and neighbors but lacked the right knowledge and skills. Sadly, people died and more were injured needlessly. CERT is designed to teach you disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster first aid, the process of triage, and will increase your knowledge about how to respond to acts of terrorism. You will learn how CERT organizes, and will be able to participate in a practice session. You will learn hands on skills and then try them out in a practice “disaster” with live “victims”. If you are in a real disaster you could be called upon to make life and death decisions, to help others, and to protect yourself. CERT training gives you an opportunity and safe place to try out your new knowledge and skills and gain valuable experience.
What CERT is not: CERT is not a “miniature fire department”. CERT members are volunteers and self-activate only if it is clear that emergency responders would be delayed. They would be able to assess their conditions in their own neighborhoods, and know how to help neighbors and family. This is strictly voluntary.
