VRS Service Retirement

The Virginia Retirement System provides an employee with retirement benefits if the employee is at least 55 years old and has at least five (5) years of contributions in the VRS.  The amount of retirement benefits varies based on factors such as years of covered service, age upon retirement, and salary. The County pays the full cost of the VRS contribution for the employee.

Eligibility for Unreduced Benefits

You are eligible to retire with unreduced benefits at age 65 (normal retirement age) with at least five years of service, or as early as age 50 if you have at least 30 years of service.

Retiree Group Health Insurance

Retirees, at least 50 years of age, who have worked for the County for at least 15 years or who have worked for the County fewer than 15 years but have retired because of a line of duty injury, are eligible to continue group health insurance for themselves and their dependents until they are eligible for Medicare, if they elect to participate prior to leaving County employment. The County bears none of the cost for this coverage.

You may have your monthly premium deducted from your VRS retirement payment.  Contact HR at 253-6680 for details.

VRS Retiree Health Insurance Credit

The credit is a dollar amount set by the General Assembly for each year of service, up to a maximum of 30 years of service. It applies to the retiree portion of the premium only, and the health insurance credit cannot exceed the amount of the insurance premium paid. Disability retirees are eligible for the maximum credit regardless of length of service.  To be eligible for the credit, you must have a minimum of 15 years of VRS service credit and your last employer must participate in the program.  If you defer retirement, you are eligible for a health insurance credit at retirement provided you meet the eligibility requirements. Public Safety Employee Supplement

If you have at least 20 years of hazardous duty service as a sheriff, law enforcement officer or firefighter, regional jail officer, corrections officers, and you are at least 50 years old, you may receive a special supplement to your benefit until you reach age 65. The amount of the supplement is based on recommendations of the VRS actuary and is reviewed every two years.  The supplement is not payable to disability retirees or persons receiving survivor benefits.
