Neighborhood Connections celebrated 15 Anniversary
with Neighborhood Day on June 13, 2009

Neighborhood Connections commemorated James City County’s neighborhood leaders at Neighborhood Day on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Ironbound Square Park, 150 Magazine Road.

Neighborhood Connections has worked for the past 15 years in a citizen-focused partnership to engage community resources and facilitate neighborhood-based activities.  Neighborhood Connections hosted Neighborhood Day and invited neighborhood leaders, past and present, to join in commemorating those who have supported and fostered neighborhood advancement in the past and continue with that effort today. This fun, come-as-you-are event provided opportunities to renew old friendships as current and past liaisons were present along with other County staff.

Robert L. Moore 2009 Community Patriot” award was presented to a deserving neighborhood leader at the event – Philip Smead from Powhatan Community Services Association (PCSA). Mr. Smead has been involved with PCSA for more than 20 years. He previously served as a past Powhatan Community Services Association officer and as a member of the Board of Directors. Presently, he serves as the liaison with the property management company and is an advisor to the current board. He also chairs the Neighborhood Watch program. The award was named in honor of the past “ mayor of Brook Haven,” Robert L. Moore, who was a long-time resident of James City County and the Brook Haven subdivision, where he served many years as president of the neighborhood association.  Mr. Moore’s wife, Florence, and daughter, Gwen Marshall, were present for the awards ceremony.

Also recognized as Community Patriots at the event for their leadership roles within their communities were Joan Bender, Colonial Heritage; Dave Lehnertz, The Association at Stonehouse; Jere Long, Wexford Hills; and Rick Meyer, The Mews.
