In presenting the award, Berkeley District Supervisor and Board of Supervisors Chairman, Mary Jones, noted, “For more than 35 years, Busch Gardens Williamsburg has thrilled local residents and assisted a thriving tourism base for James City County and the Historic Triangle. Busch Gardens Williamsburg is the 2011 recipient of the Captain John Smith Award for its continued investment in the County and charitable efforts in the local region.”

  • 17,084 of 50,244 registered voters cast ballots.
  • 199 volunteer Officers of Election served at 18 Polling Places and the Central Absentee Precinct. Over 60 students from Warhill High School served as Election Pages.
  • ALL properly executed Absentee Ballots (342) received before 7 p.m. on Election Day were counted. Most common reasons for not being counted were lack of witness or missing information.
  • 8 of 14 Provisional Ballots were counted. Most common reason for not being counted was improper voter registration.

How to get rid of FOG – Protect your home and preserve our environment this holiday season by properly disposing fats, oils and grease (FOG).

  • Pour cooled oil or grease into an old glass jar or can and dispose of it in the trash or take it to the kitchen grease recycling containers at the Convenience Centers.
  • Remove excess grease on cookware with a paper towel and throw it away with any food scraps.

TurkeyHelp feed local families this holiday season – Drop off your donations of canned foods at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center (JCWCC), 5301 Longhill Rd., through Nov. 19 during regular operating hours.

As a special offer, on Nov. 19 only, visitors who make donations of two or more canned goods can use the Center for free for that day. Free use includes access to all fitness equipment and the swimming pool. Thank you for supporting area food banks. Info: 757-259-4200.






Santa callingAre you on Santa’s contact list? – Parks and Recreation is providing a direct line to the North Pole for one night only, Dec. 6 from 5:30-8 p.m. Santa Claus wants to talk to all children in James City County and the City of Williamsburg who are nine years old and younger.

Registration forms are available at the Community Centers, Satellite Services and online. The registration deadline is Nov. 30.
