Kidsburg at Mid-County ParkWhat do you see at Mid County Park? – Parks and Recreation is updating its Master Plan for Mid County Park. The Park, located at 3793 Ironbound Road, includes the community-built Kidsburg playground.

The Master Plan is the guide for developing programs, improving park structures and adding facilities over the next five years and beyond. We need to know what’s important to you and your family. Two community meetings have been scheduled:

  • February 16, 6:30 p.m.
  • February 22, 12:30 p.m.

Both meetings will be held at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center (JCWCC). Meeting discussion will focus on the process, why it’s needed and proposed Park additions and improvements.

In addition to the meetings, there are a variety of ways to let us know what you think.

An example of a successful stormwater management project in Scott’s Pond.JCC recruiting committee members - The Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for the Stormwater Program Advisory Committee until February 23, 2011.

The Advisory Committee was established in 2008 to assist the Board and County staff by identifying drainage and flooding problems and other stormwater needs; developing goals and priorities; and participating in public education and outreach initiatives. The Committee consists of representatives from each voting district and membership is open to any business or resident of James City County. The Expo gives staff and families an opportunity to connect.It’s Expo time! – Come to the FREE Destination Recreation Expo February 26, 9 a.m. - noon at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center. Complete early bird registration for summer camps, discover your parks and learn about classes and programs.

Interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and raffles are just a few great features of this event. We’ll keep your children engaged while you gather information about summer camp opportunities, sports, outdoor, aquatic programs, special events, parks and facilities, REC Connect and inclusion programs.





Citizen Leadership Academy logoApply today for CLA - County residents are encouraged to apply to become part of the 2011 Citizen Leadership Academy (CLA) scheduled to begin in March.

The free ten-session program is designed to give participants an in-depth look at how local government works and how they can become involved. Topics covered include: the organization of County departments, the Budget, comprehensive planning, public safety and more.

Class size is limited to 25 participants and attendance is required at all sessions. Applications and additional information are available online or by calling
259-4986. Application deadline February 25.





The new Citizen Services web portal.The new place to go for County info – Check out the County’s Citizen Services web portal that offers a central location for information that you can use daily. It’s organized in two areas:

  • Getting Involved Stay informed about your local government and tax dollars with links to County calendars, public meeting agendas, land use information and more.

  • Living Here Follow links to current hot topics, tax rates and payment due dates, local property databases and more.

Applying for a mortgage.In the market for a new home? – The Office of Housing and Community Development will hold a First Time Homebuyer class on February 22 and 24, 6 - 9 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 5300 Palmer Lane, Suite 1A.

Anyone who is currently purchasing a home or is considering a purchase in the future will benefit from this class. Topics covered include personal finances, credit and credit scoring, qualifying and applying for a loan, choosing the right home and what happens at a loan closing. Space is limited, call 259-5340 to register.





A “Lawn Ranger” talks with a customer about a soil sample.Register for Turf Love University – Virginia Cooperative Extension and the James City County/Williamsburg Master Gardeners present the 10th Annual Turf Love “University” Spring Edition March 5, 9:30 - noon at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center. The program is FREE, but pre-registration is required by calling the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office at 564-2170.

All lawn care issues including warm and cool season grasses, weed control and fertilizing will be addressed by our specially trained “Lawn Rangers.”
