It’s budget time – The Board of Supervisors opened the pre-budget public hearing for the second year of the FYI11/12 biennial budget at their meeting on January 11.
Board Chairman Mary Jones wants to hear what people have to say. “Even though next year’s fiscal budget was planned and adopted last year, we still have many challenges. Our economy remains uncertain, revenue is flat and we need to see the results of the 2011 General Assembly session. Priorities may change and that’s why it’s important that citizens give the Board and County staff their input,” says Jones.

I see meeting notices for the Policy Committee. What does this Committee do? – The Planning Commission established a sub-committee of four members to advise the full Commission on items such as the Capital Improvements Program and ordinance amendments. They are currently reviewing recommendations made by staff members for updates to the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance.
This month’s topics include:
January 24 – Commercial Districts: suggestions of the Business Climate Task Force and permitted uses.
Cancelled... January 25 – Development Standards: sidewalks, private streets, landscaping, parking, lighting, timbering, floodplain, and outdoor operations.
January 31 – Cumulative Impacts: update on a database to track new commercial and residential units through approval and construction.
Meetings are at 6 p.m. in Building A of the County Government Center. Meetings are open to the public and opportunities for comment are available. Comments can also be submitted online. Meeting materials are available online the week prior to the scheduled meeting.

Sign up for CERT – Be more involved in your community and learn to be prepared for an emergency by taking the James City County Community Emergency Response Team (JCC CERT) course.
JCC CERT volunteers are trained in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. In the case of an emergency, they are ready to assist their neighbors until professional emergency responders and critical resources arrive.
The free course begins in February. Information and registration forms are available online or by calling 564-2142.
A quick reminder – Dog tags are due by January 31, 2011. A valid rabies certificate is required. Tags can be purchased at the Treasurer’s Office or Satellite Services. If the rabies certificate is on file with the Treasurer’s Office, ePayment may be used.
