Congratulations! – Fifteen County citizens were recognized by the Board of Supervisors at the May 10 Board meeting for completing the County’s Citizen Leadership Academy (CLA). CLA is a free 10-session program designed to give participants an in-depth look at how local government works and how they can become involved. Topics covered included the organization of County departments, the Budget, comprehensive planning, public safety and more. Graduates are encouraged to become leaders in their neighborhoods and active members of County boards and commissions.

Get ready and save money – Take advantage of Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday May 25-31 and stock up on supplies for protecting homes and businesses during hurricane season.
Many everyday items costing less than $60 are included: batteries, first aid kits, bottled water, cell phone chargers, duct tape and more. Larger items, including portable generators costing less than $1,000, are also included. For a complete list of eligible items, visit the website.

Head out to Family Fun Fest– Make sure you are at Chickahominy Riverfront Park on Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for a fun-filled family day with clowns, magic, face painting, balloon artists, moon rides, Touch-a-Truck, a petting zoo, the Gamer Bus and more. Sign-up for the annual FUN RUN (pre-register at
1-800-SENTARA) and bring your bikes for the Family Trail Ride.

Before you hook up that sprinkler – Remember the annual outdoor water use regulations for James City Service Authority (JCSA) customers remain in effect through September 30.
Under the Ordinances, customers may use water outdoors for any purpose, at any time, on any day, as long as it is with a container or hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle. Any other method of outdoor water use must follow the Outdoor Water Use Schedule, which is based on street address. The regulations remain in effect through September 30. Want to pay your bill online? The County offers electronic bill payment through the e-Payment service. It’s an easy way to save time and protect the environment.
Sign up for firearm safety classes – The Police Department is offering a free firearm safety class May 21, June 4 and June 18 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center, 5087 John Tyler Highway.
The class does not include hands-on training and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location.
Pre-registration is required and class size is limited.
