Know before you go! – Not sure if you were affected by the recent redistricting? Do you know if you are eligible to vote in the August 23 Republican Party Primary Election?

The updated State Board of Elections website is the place to go to view district assignments, verify an address and find directions from your door to the polling place.

New Law Enforcement Center opens – The County’s Police Department has moved to the new Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way, located across from Thomas Nelson Community College.

The 47,156 square feet facility brings all police divisions and units under one roof. The new location is more centrally located and has the capacity to serve as a back-up Emergency Operations Center.

In recognition of the County’s commitment towards energy efficiency, the Law Enforcement Center has qualified for certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program at the Gold level.

Before you hook up that sprinkler – Remember the annual outdoor water use regulations for James City Service Authority (JCSA) customers remain in effect through September 30.

Under the Ordinances, customers may use water outdoors for any purpose, at any time, on any day, as long as it is with a container or hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle. Any other method of outdoor water use must follow the Outdoor Water Use Schedule, which is based on street address. The regulations remain in effect through September 30. REC Connect priority registration deadline August 5 – The County’s Before and After School Programs are available to youth ages 5-14 (grades K-8) who are enrolled in Williamsburg/James City County schools (WJCC). Before and After School programs are held at all WJCC elementary schools and middle schools combine for an After School program at Berkeley. Transportation for Toano and Hornsby students is provided to Berkeley.

Beat the heat – With temperatures and heat indexes in the triple digits, staying cool is not a luxury, but a necessity for health, safety and quality of life. Where can citizens and visitors go when they need a place to cool off? Visit the following locations:

• James City/Williamsburg Community Center
• Human Services Center
• Williamsburg and James City County Libraries

Get rid of your old paint and your VCR in one trip – In conjunction with the Household Chemical Collection, the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) is holding a free Computer and Electronics Collection August 13 at Lafayette High School, 4460 Longhill Rd., from 8 a.m.-noon. The event is open to all residents of the County, Williamsburg, York County, Hampton and Poquoson. Proof of residency may be required.

VPPSA’s website has a listing of household chemicals and electronics that will be accepted at the event.
