Smoke in Garage - 08/07/00

The James City County Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in a garage at a single-family home yesterday 08/06/2000 at 5:17 p.m. The first unit arrived at 5:23 p.m. and found that there was a fire inside of the home.  The fire was at 113 Wellington Circle in the Saint Georges Hundred neighborhood in the county.  This subdivision is located off John Tyler Highway (Route 5).  The owner/occupant is Mr. Bruce McDonald.

 

The fire department personnel reported that they arrived to find light smoke coming from the opened garage doors.  A neighbor was on the scene and reported that no one was at home.  Fire Crews entered the house to find very heavy smoke conditions with zero visibility.  The fire was centered in the laundry room area of the home.  Damage was described as heavy heat and smoke damage on the first floor and moderate smoke damage with light heat damage on the second floor.  The residents returned home while the fire department was still on the scene.  The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes.

 

The origin and cause of the fire was investigated by our Fire Marshal’s office.  It was determined that an apparent lint buildup in the dryer vent hose caused the fire.  We recommend that residents check and clean the lint filters in their clothes dryer after every use.  This safety precaution can prevent serious fires from occurring.

 

The James City County Fire Department responded with two engine companies, a ladder company and a medic (Ambulance) company.  The Williamsburg Fire Department responded mutual aid with a medic (Ambulance) company.  There were 12 Firefighters on the scene.  There were no injuries as a result of this fire.
