Motor Vehicle Accident - 11/17/00

PRESS RELEASE

JAMES CITY COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT

James City County Fire Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident this morning in the 18500 block of New Kent Highway in New Kent County at 07:05 a.m.   The first unit on the scene reported that a small car was essentially wrapped around a tree.  A New Kent Emergency Medical Technician was first on the scene and had wrapped the sole occupant of the vehicle in a blanket.

The Emergency Medical Technician stated that the patient was found crawling up an embankment.  The patient’s clothing was wet.  It appeared that the patient had been ejected from the car during the accident.  The patient suffered from multiple trauma injuries and possible hypothermia.  The potential hypothermia could have been a result of the combination of her wet clothing and the cool temperatures this morning.  The patient was stabilized on the scene and transported to a pre-designated helicopter land zone in James City County where the Nightingale Helicopter landed and transported the patient to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.  The patient was conscious and alert when care was transferred to Nightingale staff.

The patient is identified as Shannon Walker, a 25-year old female from West Point, Virginia. The response included units from the James City Volunteer Rescue Squad and the James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department.
