Joint Disaster Drill - 11/30/00

PRESS RELEASE

JAMES CITY COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT, JAMES CITY COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, WILLIAMSBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT,WILLIAMSBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT, WILLIAMSBURG JAMES CITY SCHOOL BOARD,WILLIAMSBURG COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, JAMES CITY COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

On Wednesday, December 6th, the James City County Emergency Services – in conjunction with the Williamsburg James City School System and Williamsburg Community Hospital will conduct a joint disaster drill at 10:00 a.m. This drill will be designed to ensure preparedness for school bus accidents resulting in multiple injuries.  The drill will simulate an actual accident, with high school EMT students portraying injured students.  These students will simulate real-life accident victims.  In addition to testing mass casualty procedures and protocols, the drill will also include a Hazardous Materials component to test HAZMAT procedures.  The incident will proceed as close to real time as possible.

The drill is designed to evaluate a number of procedure areas for the participating agencies.  The school system will work through procedures on crisis management and emergencies concerning school transportation.  Williamsburg Community Hospital will test their ability to cope with a mass casualty accident in the Emergency Department.  The Police and Fire Departments will be testing their emergency action plans and procedures.  Actual calls from concerned parents will be relayed to the James City and Williamsburg 911 call centers in order to test their ability to cope with distressed parents.  The primary area of evaluation will be the inter-agency communication and cooperation during a crisis situation.

An additional component of the drill will include the activation of the James City County Emergency Operations Center to deal with both the HAZMAT and multi casualty emergency events.

Recognizing the recent increase in school bus accidents, Williamsburg, James City County and Williamsburg Community Hospital officials began planning this drill over six weeks ago.

Members of print and TV media are invited to attend this event.  The drill will begin at 10:00 a.m. and could conclude by 11:30 a.m. The location of the drill will be 3200 Monticello Avenue in James City County and at Williamsburg Community Hospital, which is located at 301 Monticello Avenue.

Press areas will be established both at the incident and at the hospital to facilitate entry and exit for the media.
