Industrial Accident at Anheuser-Busch - October 4, 2001

JAMES CITY COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT
At 8:34 on October 4, 2001, the James City County Fire Department responded to a report of an industrial accident at the Anheuser – Busch Brewery located at 7801 Pocahontas Trail in James City County. Upon our arrival we found a 50 year old male patient pinned under a “Glass Hopper”. The device is described as a glass hopper because it is designed to transport glass. The hopper is a metal scoop type device that is set on a lift that raises and lowers the hopper. The hopper is about the size of a small dumpster. The Anheuser –Busch First Responder Team had already arrived and started treatment for the patient prior to our arrival. With the assistance of the First Responder Team, we lifted the hopper off of the patient and removed him from underneath of it. The patient had fractures to at least one leg, an injury to his right arm, and facial injuries.
Because of the nature of the accident and the patient’s condition, we requested the Nightingale Helicopter Ambulance to respond to transport the patient to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The patient was conscious when we transferred care to Nightingale.
