Hampton Roads receives over $7.6 million in construction and maintenance improvements
At their monthly meeting today in Richmond, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded over $7.6 million in construction and maintenance contracts to projects throughout Hampton Roads. The largest contract, $5.1 million for a regional traffic signal project, provides for quick traffic signal installation at various locations throughout the region. The contract was awarded to Midasco, Inc. of Elkridge, Maryland.
Grading, drainage improvements, realigning and asphalt paving will improve a section of Route 735 in Sussex County. The board awarded a contract for $1.2 million to Bishop & Settle Construction Co., Inc. of Alberta to complete the improvements. This project will enhance the safety and ride quality of the roadway by providing a wider surface with more gentle curves.
The board approved $511,728 in guardrail improvements in James City and York Counties on Routes 60, 143 and part of Route 199. York County and the cities of Newport News and Hampton also received an additional $462,353 for guardrail improvements. Both projects will upgrade guardrails to new standards set by the Federal Highway Administration.
As a result of a previous Transportation Enhancement Grant awarded to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, a $255,135 contract was awarded to Techcon, Inc. of Norfolk for work on the interpretive pathway at the Jamestown-Yorktown riverfront. The funding improves accessibility to outdoor exhibits and provides a new way for visitors to learn about 17th century history.
The 17-member CTB appointed by the Governor meets on the third Thursday of each month. The board is primarily responsible for locating routes, approving construction contracts, creating traffic regulations, naming highways and administering and allocating for the Transportation Trust Fund.
