WalMart Receives James River Enterprise Zone Grants

Keith Taylor, Secretary of the James City County, Virginia Industrial Development Authority and Director of the Countys Office of Economic Development Office, recently presented Wal-Mart Import Distribution Center #6088 with two James River Enterprise Zone local first-year grants totaling more than $289,000. The two checks were accepted by Brien Craft, General Manager of the Center, on Wal-Mart's behalf. The grant amounts were based on the Number One Fortune 500 company's initial and expansion investments in the Import Center at GreenMount Industrial Park and were approved by the County's IDA at its November meeting. To date, Wal-Mart's investment in the two million square-foot facility there totals in excess of $64 million. Some 400 Wal-Mart associates are already employed at the two-year-old facility.
"This is the newest of only three bulk import centers Wal-Mart has around the country", noted Craft. "Its strategic location allows us excellent interstate access to both the Ports of Hampton Roads and the eastern United States. James City County's enterprise zone grant program was also instrumental in helping us make this location decision, and now the company is really benefiting from that decision."
Taylor added that "Wal-Mart will continue to be eligible for local enterprise zone grants in declining amounts over each the next four years as well. [James City County's] grant package was thoughtfully created to both attract and keep compatible business capital investments here for a long time."
The James River Enterprise Zone is a 5.6 square mile area located at the southeastern end of the County. It contains 2,400 acres planned and zoned for industrial uses. Since the creation of the zone in 1996, four companies have taken advantage of the County's local inducement program - Ball Metal Container, Service Metal Fabricators, Wal-Mart, and the newest recipient Hallmark Enterprises, which is currently going through the County s site plan and subdivision permitting process. The Wal-Mart Center is the largest single grant recipient thus far.
