JCSA Cap It Well Abandonment Program Awarded Grant

JAMES CITY COUNTY - For the third consecutive year, the James City Service Authority (JCSA) has been awarded a Department of Environmental Quality Source Water Protection Grant for JCSA's Cap It program. Cap It educates County residents about the dangers of open wells and provides funding to properly abandon wells at no cost to the well owner. Using the grant monies and its own funds, the JCSA abandoned forty-three private wells in 2003, bringing the total of abandoned wells to ninety-six since Cap It's launch in 2002. Funding in 2004 should allow the JCSA to abandon approximately forty more wells.
Cap It gained regional and national recognition in 2003 when it was awarded the National Association of Counties (NACO) Best of Category (Rural) Award in the Environmental Protection and Energy category.
