James City County's Neighborhood Connections has named Greater First Colony Area Civic Association its 2004 Neighborhood of the Year. Neighborhood Connections honored County neighborhoods in 2004 as part of a yearlong celebration of the program's 10th anniversary.

The success of this neighborhood can be attributed to the outstanding communication among its members who worked together to successfully redevelop their 30-year-old marina in 2004. Nearly 400 residents pooled their efforts to dredge and completely refurbish the marina. Utilizing the talents in its five contiguous subdivisions – First Colony, Heritage Landing, Shellbank, Shellbank Woods and Chestnut Hills -- this neighborhood works together to annually review and update their by-laws, publish a monthly newsletter, maintain a web site and hold quarterly open membership meetings to keep residents informed.

Neighborhood Connections provides a variety of services to County neighborhoods that join the program. To find out how your neighborhood can benefit, contact Barbara Watson, Director, at 229-7630.
