James City County has named Barbara Watson as Community Services Assistant Manager effective Feb. 1.
“Barbara has served as the Acting Assistant Manager of Community Services on two different occasions in the past 2 years,” said Community Services Manager Doug Powell. “The experience she gained during these assignments, as well as her knowledge of the community and ability to work collaboratively will be a great benefit to the County and the citizens we serve.”
Community Services provides oversight for Social Services, Youth Services, Housing and Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Neighborhood Connections, Colonial Community Corrections, Williamsburg Area Transport and Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Watson joined the County in 1986 as a technician for Virginia Cooperative Extension. She later worked as a Neighborhood Resources Coordinator for Neighborhood Connections. In 2001, she was named Director of Neighborhood Connections. In March 2005, she was named Acting Assistant Manager for Community Services.
Watson’s community activities include serving as President of All Together Inc. and as a Board member of the YMCA and the Rita Welsh Adult Literacy Board. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Historic Triangle and currently serves on its Board.
Watson has a bachelor’s degree in governmental administration from Christopher Newport University and an associate’s degree in human services from Thomas Nelson Community College.
