For the fifth consecutive year, the James City Service Authority (JCSA) has been awarded a Department of Environmental Quality Wellhead Protection Grant for JCSA's Cap It program. Cap It educates County residents about the dangers of open wells and provides funding to properly abandon wells at no cost to the well owner.
Using the grant monies and its own funds, the JCSA abandoned 34 private wells in 2005, bringing the total of abandoned wells to 162 since Cap It’s launch in 2002. Funding in 2006 should allow the JCSA to abandon approximately 34 more wells.
Residents can learn more about Cap It and apply for free well abandonment by logging on www.bewatersmart.org/capit or contacting Beth Davis, JCSA Environmental Education Coordinator, at (757) 253-6859.
