Keith Taylor wins coveted Virginia Cardinal Award

Keith A. Taylor, Director of James City County’s Office of Economic Development, has received the prestigious Cardinal Award at the Silver Anniversary meeting of the 600+ member Virginia Economic Developers Association (VEDA). The Cardinal Award is given by VEDA as its highest professional honor and is a statewide recognition of professionalism and organizational commitment.
Taylor has managed the County’s economic development office for the past eighteen years. Prior to that, he served as research analyst and deputy director of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority staff. Taylor’s James City County accomplishments include participating in some 4.8 million building square feet worth of industrial real estate transactions, and establishing the County’s Captain John Smith Award as a way to recognize outstanding local businesses annually.
“It is obviously a most positive reflection on James City County and its economic development efforts that Keith has been so honored by his peers at the local, regional, and State levels,” noted Sanford Wanner, County Administrator. “This recognition is well-deserved, and his colleagues at the County congratulate him.”
The Cardinal Award selection criteria include (1) demonstrated accomplishments in the field that extend “far beyond” those necessary by the individual to satisfy the position(s) for which he or she has been compensated, and (2) demonstrated service to VEDA as a past or present member. Only twenty-six economic development professionals have now been so honored since the award’s inception in 1988. Taylor, who has served on numerous VEDA committees and as its president in 1998, now joins the Cardinal Council which serves as a consultative resource to the VEDA Board on an as-needed basis.
Taylor previously served on the Governor’s Regional Economic Development Advisory Council and on the seventeen-state Southern Economic Development Council Board of Directors. He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary.
