James City County Police Department Receives Grants from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Totaling More than $150,000

James City County Police Department has been awarded three grants through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) totaling $158,315 to augment its existing law enforcement efforts.
The Technology Improvement grant for $50,000 funds the purchase and installation of the E-summons feature of the existing records management system, which coincides with the expansion of the Department’s Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) project. This feature streamlines the process of issuing and processing traffic summonses in a more efficient method through the Police Department and the courts and eliminates multiple levels of redundancy.
The Crime Analysis grant has been awarded for $64,595. This grant provides funding for the salary/benefits, training, equipment, and supplies for the Department’s Crime Analyst. This is the fourth and final year of funding for this position from DCJS. The Crime Analyst is responsible for performing tactical, strategic, and administrative crime analyses on data collected by the department. Crime analysis reports continue to be disseminated to department personnel, county citizens, and other criminal justice agencies as appropriate. The Analyst further applies crime analysis to enhance the overall safety of James City County citizens and visitors.
The Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) was also awarded for $43,720 to combat gang activity in the County. This is the 3rd year that we have received this grant. In the first year, the funds were used for training for officers and equipment and software used to assist in the documentation of suspected gang activity. Last year, the grant was used to fund the salary and benefits of a full-time Gang Investigator. This years’ grant funding continues to pay for that position. The Gang Investigator has primarily the same responsibilities as a general investigator, but case investigation focus is on gang members, gang associates, other gang affiliations, gang-related crime, and any other incidents were gang affiliation may be suspected. The Gang Investigator also works collaboratively with regional anti-gang efforts, such as the Hampton Roads Regional Violence Prevention Program and the Peninsula Safe Streets Task Force.
