James City County’s Department of General Services is partnering with the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority to recycle leaves and natural woody debris and turn it into mulch. Materials brought to the convenience centers on a daily basis are taken to the regional compost facility in York County for recycling. In return, the County receives a reduced disposal fee and free mulch for all County facilities, schools, parks, and medians. This program is another way the County has made an effort to be environmentally responsible and reduce operating cost.
Since the program began in February 2008, the Department has recycled 100 percent of all materials collected, over 810 tons of wood debris. In return, the County has received 2,000 cubic yards of free mulch.
The James City County’s grounds maintenance staff has worked diligently to utilize the material and through their hard work, the County is an attractive and ‘greener’ place for all to enjoy.
