The Land Use designation, used in conjunction with County development guidelines, details how a property owner may be able to use his or her property in the future. Land Use designations and development standards are used when the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors consider certain development proposals, such as rezonings and special use permits. The Land Use map helps determine what kind of growth will occur in the County and where.
The Steering Committee is scheduled to vote on all Land Use applications in May. Staff reports and preliminary Steering Committee recommendations are available on http://www.jccplans.org/steering/land-use.php. Citizens can comment on any application on http://www.jccegov.com/citizens/fillsurvey.php?sid=42 or by e-mailing planning@james-city.va.us.
Committee meetings are televised live on JCC TV48 and rebroadcast Wednesdays on Community Channel 46 at 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. or on-demand on www.jccegov.com/jcctv48.
The Comprehensive Plan is the County’s master plan for guiding future growth. Reviewed every 5 years, it is used to evaluate development proposals and guide the decisions of County departments. It covers all aspects of the community, including economic development, population growth, public facilities, parks and recreation, and transportation. The process to update the County’s 2003 Comprehensive Plan began in November 2007.
