"Explosive Device” on North Riverside Drive in James City County
On Monday, January 30 at approximately 5 p.m., the James City County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to assist the James City County Police Department concerning the discovery of what appeared to be an “explosive device” on a shelf in a backyard shed of a residence on North Riverside Drive in the Chickahominy Haven subdivision in upper James City County. Nearby residences were evacuated for 300 feet in each direction with James City County Fire/EMS units on scene as a safety precaution.
Based on the appearance of the device, the Fire Marshals requested the assistance of the Virginia State Police (VSP) Bomb Squad. The VSP bomb technicians, utilizing their robot, were able to render the “device” safe. It was determined that the “device” was not active but only a “prop”. All units were off the scene by 11 p.m.
The James City County Fire Marshal’s Office has completed their investigation and no charges are pending.
