James City County Police Department
The James City County Police Department was formed in 1980 and in 1983 it separated from the Sheriff's Department to handle all criminal complaints. It is divided into five functional components: Uniform Division, Investigations Division, Community Services, Support Services, and Animal Control. The Department has 90 sworn law enforcement officers and annually responds to over 21,000 calls for service each year.
The Department provides police services in all areas of the County including patrol, investigations, and traffic enforcement. A full range of crime prevention services are also available, such as assistance in establishing Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs, security surveys for homes, as well as commercial establishments, and Project KidCare. There are School Resource Officers in two middle schools and each high school and also a Bike Patrol Unit.
Our mission is to "perform our duties and fulfill our responsibilities of enforcing the law, preserving the peace, and providing police services so that it improves the quality of life for all citizens within our jurisdiction."
