Gang Awareness for Parents
James City County Police Department has been awarded a grant through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services totaling $43,720.00 to enhance the Department’s efforts towards the prevention of gangs in our community.
There exists a real need in the law enforcement community to learn, train and upgrade methods for dealing with gangs. There is also a serious need in our community to develop methods focusing on prevention. Gangs are being pushed out of localities that are addressing gang problems effectively. Smaller communities, like James City County, must proactively combat gangs in order to prevent them from moving to our community.
Through this grant, the James City County Police Department will further train its officers in gang identification, methods of operation, as well as prevention, suppression, and intervention. The Department will collaborate with education administrators, correctional facility administrators, local counselors, social services, and other organizations and departments in order to address the gang problem forthwith.
Furthermore, the James City County Police Department has joined efforts with other Peninsula law enforcement agencies and school districts in a violence prevention initiative, The Regional Youth Violence Prevention Program, which will include gang prevention. This program will allow the jurisdictions to collaborate in the development, administration, and implementation of this initiative. A program manager will be responsible for working with these local jurisdictions in program development and its delivery to students and parents.
