School Resource Officers
School Resource Officers are assigned to the schools to provide information to the students, parents and staff regarding law enforcement and the criminal justice system. The officers maintain high visibility at the schools, attending student functions as well as teaching curriculum units and providing classroom presentations on varied topics. The officers also are available for conferences with students and parents in both small group or individual sessions.

The Police Mentoring Program was started by Senior Officer Sean Gormus in the Spring of 2000. Police Officers volunteer their time to mentor a student at one of our middle schools. The officers meet with their assigned student one day a week for about one hour at a time and do homework, study, research a project, or just talk. The program is currently in place at James Blair Middle School and Berkeley Middle School and has ten officers that act as mentors to students. The program continues to grow in students and in mentors. If you are interested in getting your child involved in the Police Mentoring Program, please contact your school's guidance counselor or Senior Officer Sean Gormus at (757) 253-1800. (This program available only at James Blair and Berkeley Middle Schools.)
