About James City County Parks and Recreation
James City County is home to the oldest English-speaking settlement in North America, however it has one of the youngest parks and recreation programs in the country. Based on the success of a pilot summer camp program in 1980, the County created a Recreation office in the spring of 1981 which was responsible for running the summer playground program and instructional classes for adults and children.
Since then the Division of Parks and Recreation has built two full-service community centers, acquired and developed 13 parks, created partnerships with private enterprise and community organizations to build facilities and operate programs, and developed and offered over 2,500 programs to meet the needs of all the county's citizens. We are committed to making our community a better place to live by offering opportunities for exercise, recreation, social interaction, growth and learning.
Mission Statement
We work in partnership with citizens to ensure responsive programs, facilities, and open space which promote personal growth, social development, and healthy life-styles.
