Originally opened in 1986 as the James City/Williamsburg Recreation Center at 33,000 square feet, the Center was expanded in 1997 and underwent a transformation from a recreation center to a place for the entire community. The name was even changed to Community Center to better capture its’ new mission. It now encompasses 84,000 square feet and houses a multitude of amenities including new space for community activities in addition to the physical activity areas. Construction for both phases was accomplished through general obligation bonds, the second of which passed overwhelmingly during a 1994 bond referendum. The cost of construction in 1986 was $3.8 million and was jointly funded along with the City of Williamsburg and built on land donated by the State. The cost of construction for the expansion was $5.5 million.
The Center hosts numerous events and activities in its’ community meeting rooms, senior and teen lounges, and community living room. It also provides access to outstanding fitness equipment and programs, aquatic facility operations and programs, and basketball, volleyball and racquetball for those who become patrons of the Center.
