This edition of Destination Recreation is your guide to summer fun in James City County! As the economy transitions, families are looking for unique ways to enjoy the days of summer, save money, and better yet, protect our planet along the way. This edition highlights the benefits of “going green” through parks and recreation. We invite you to discover your parks – ride your bike, take a hike or simply spend time outdoors. Learn to make something new or grow something green through our many class offerings. Help build a healthier community by engaging in efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle!
Our featured activities include the safe, affordable and very popular Rec Connect summer and before and after school programs offered at convenient sites throughout the community. Our youth offerings focus on nature and the environment and include the new Trailblazing Kids Camp, Run4Fun Camp and the Imagine Tomorrow Computer Camp. Additional “green” programs include managing your money and car care that can help reduce pollutants through proper vehicle maintenance.
For fun, check out our Kids Extreme PE, Fencing and Circus camps! New family events include the Outdoor Derby combining our annual fishing derby and National Trails Day into one exciting event held at three parks! Also new is Thursdays on the Square, a concert series in New Town and the always popular Family Fun Fest which provides an opportunity to spend a summer day with friends. May is Bike Month, so be sure to check out all the cycling opportunities open to you and your family. July is Parks and Recreation Month, so stay tuned for our month-long list of fun activities as well as our annual Kids Coloring Contest which is detailed inside this brochure.
This is just a sampling of summer with Parks and Recreation! I hope you’ll take the time to explore all the great opportunities available to you and your family.
