Household Chemical Collection Event Curbside Recycling

 

James City County operates three Convenience Centers for residential recycling and trash disposal. The Convenience Centers and the curbside recycling program accept the following materials:

  • Newspapers and their inserts
  • Corrugated cardboard and single-layer cardboard
  • Brown paper grocery bags,
  • Residential mixed paper (magazines, junk mail, phone books, catalogs, school paper, computer paper, copy paper, envelopes)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Steel and bimetal food and beverage cans including metal lids
  • Aluminum cans
  • Foil and pie pans
  • No. 1 and 2 plastic bottles - Must have a narrow neck or pouring spout and cap discarded
  • Plastic Shopping Bags and Newspaper Bags*

What can be recycled: please be clean and dry

- plastic grocery bags

- plastic department store bags

- newspaper sleeves

- dry-cleaning bags

- toilet paper/paper towel over wrap

- water bottle case wrap

- stretch film (no household saran wrap)

- plastic trash bags

 

*Accepted only at convenience centers

Convenience Center Locations and Operating Hours

Jolly Pond Road - 1204 Jolly Pond Road - 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at Jolly Pond Road are kitchen grease, waste motor oil and antifreeze, tires*, propane tanks*, scrap metal (including appliances), and brush*. (*coupons required). When using this facility, residents are urged to allow ample time to unload vehicles prior to the 5:00 p.m. closing. Directions>>>

 

Tewning Road - 107 Tewning Road - Monday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; Tuesday - Saturday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Closed - Sunday. Waste motor oil, antifreeze, and kitchen grease accepted. Directions>>>

 

Toano Convenience Center - 185 Industrial Boulevard (Hankins Industrial Park) - 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at the Toano Convenience Center are tires (coupons required), automobile batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, metal appliances, and kitchen grease. Directions>>>

 

The Convenience Centers are closed on the following holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. On Christmas Eve, all centers will close at noon.

 

Transfer Station

The James City County Transfer Station, 1204 Jolly Pond Road, is operated by Waste Management. The transfer station is open seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for County residents. For commercial customers the transfer station is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. For payment information and minimal disposal requirements, contact the Transfer Station at (757) 565-1279. No tires, batteries, liquids, appliances, medical or hazardous waste are accepted. All waste delivered to the Transfer Station is hauled to a Subtitle D, State-regulated landfill located in Charles City.

 

Christmas Tree Recycling Program


Remove all ornaments, decorations, and tree stands to make sure that your live tree can be properly recycled.  Check the information for each community and call your community office for more details.

 

JAMES CITY COUNTY:  Trees will be accepted free of charge 12/26/11-1/31/12 at the three County Convenience Centers:  Toano, Jolly Pond Road, Tewning Road

 

POQUOSON:  Trees can be delivered to the swimming pool parking lot beginning 12/26/11-1/13/12 or residents can bring their trees to the VPPSA Compost Facility at 145 Goodwin Neck Road.

 

WILLIAMSBURG:  Trees will be collected from the curb on Monday, 1/2/12, and Monday, 1/9/12.

 

YORK COUNTY:  Trees can be placed curbside for collections 1/2/12-1/13/12 or residents can bring their trees to the VPPSA Compost Facility at 145 Goodwin Neck Road.
