James City County operates three Convenience Centers for residential recycling and trash disposal. The Convenience Centers and the curbside recycling program accept the following materials:
- Newspapers and their inserts
- Corrugated cardboard and single-layer cardboard
- Brown paper grocery bags,
- Residential mixed paper (magazines, junk mail, phone books, catalogs, school paper, computer paper, copy paper, envelopes)
- Glass bottles and jars
- Steel and bimetal food and beverage cans including metal lids
- Aluminum cans
- Foil and pie pans
- No. 1 and 2 plastic bottles (e.g., liter bottles, gallon jugs)

Convenience Center Locations and Operating Hours
Jolly Pond Road - 1204 Jolly Pond Road - 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at Jolly Pond Road are waste motor oil and antifreeze, tires*, propane tanks*, scrap metal (including appliances), and brush*. (*coupons required). When using this facility, residents are urged to allow ample time to unload vehicles prior to the 5:00 p.m. closing.
Tewning Road - 107 Tewning Road - Monday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; Tuesday - Saturday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Closed - Sunday. Waste motor oil and antifreeze accepted.
Toano Convenience Center - 185 Industrial Boulevard (Hankins Industrial Park) - 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. Other recyclables taken at the Toano Convenience Center are tires (coupons required), automobile batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, and metal appliances.
The Convenience Centers are closed on the following holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. On July 4, the Jolly Pond Convenience Center will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., and all other centers will be closed. On Christmas Eve, all centers will close at noon.
Transfer Station
The James City County Transfer Station, 1204 Jolly Pond Road, is operated by Waste Management. The transfer station is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and is closed on Sunday. Waste is accepted from both commercial customers and County residents. For payment information and minimal disposal requirements, contact the Transfer Station at (757) 565-1279. No tires, batteries, liquids, appliances, medical or hazardous waste are accepted. All waste delivered to the Tranfer Station is hauled to a state-of-the-art, Subtitle D, State-regulated landfill located in Hampton.
Christmas Tree Recycling Program
Recycle your Christmas trees! Take it to one of the County Convenience Centers during operating hours. Remember to remove the tree stand and decorations. The Convenience Centers are located at 107 Tewning Road, 1204 Jolly Pond Road, and 185 Industrial Boulevard (Hankins Industrial Park). See above paragraph for operating hours. Questions?
