Jamestown Beach Campground and Yacht Basin
Working in partnership with The Trust for Public Land, James City County purchased the JBC and JYB in December 2006. The 198 acres along the James River and Powhatan Creek is adjacent to Historic Jamestowne (owned by the National Park Service/Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities) and Jamestown Settlement (owned by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation) historic sites and the Colonial National Historical Park. JBC and JYB are located on either side of Jamestown Road, identified as a Community Character Corridor in the County’s 2003 Comprehensive Plan.
The purchase was partially funded by grants from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) and the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As a result, portions of the JBC and the JYB are subject to conservation covenants that impact future use and development.
Prior to the sale, the JBC was a public campground with tent and trailer camping. Current use of the JBC includes primitive public camping (30 sites) during the summer, public day access to the James River beach and occasional special events such as festivals in the open field portions of the Campground.
The JYB continues to operate as a 98 slip marina under a short term lease with a private entity. The Yacht Basin offers slip rentals, boat ramp access, boat sales, and fuel/marine retail sales.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
CRP, located on John Tyler Highway (Route 5) at the confluence of the Chickahominy River and Gordon’s Creek, is one of thirteen parks operated by the James City County Division of Parks and Recreation. The 140-acre site includes two outdoor swimming pools, a boat ramp, a fishing pier, approximately 185 trailer and tent camping sites, a small driving range, a pavilion, a small store and access to the Virginia Capital to Capital Trail for walking and biking.
Originally used as farmland, the CRP property has been a campground since the late 1960s. The County purchased it in 2001 from a timeshare resort company. Like the JBC and JYB, the CRP is located along a Community Character Corridor.
