the Virginia Company established what was to become the first permanent English colony in the New World right here on Jamestown Island. Today, we're a suburban County of over 50,000 people, about half-way between the metropolitan areas of Richmond and Hampton Roads, and next door to Williamsburg's College of William and Mary and Colonial restoration. Green Spring Plantation Built as a home for Governor Sir William Berkeley in 1645, Green Spring is located three miles from Jamestown in James City County, Virginia. This historical site is significant in its potential for learning about the complex roots of what we know today as the United States of America.
