Youth Advisory Council
Become a Shining Star
The purpose of the Youth Advisory Council is to serve as a link between the youth of James City County youth and their government.
What We Do
Work of the Council includes:
- serving as a liaison between the James City County Office of Community Services and the youth of James City County;
- providing a platform for County youth to present their ideas, needs, and suggestions;
- enhancing awareness of needs, problems, and issues affecting the youth of James City County;
- performing annual community services projects; and
- meeting regularly with the James City County Board of Supervisors to discuss issues important to local youth.
Who we are?
We are the James City County Youth Advisory Council, which consist of 15 student members representing Grades 8 - 12. We represent all area middle and high school students. We are a very well diverse group by gender, race, and where we live geographically in the County. We are the eyes and ears that represent all youth from birth to 18 years of age.

How can you get involved or become a member?
For questions about the council or for youth interested in becoming a member, please contact Kelley Herbert, Recreation Program Coordinator at (757) 259-5376 or kelleyh@james-city.va.us. Applications can be picked up at the James City-Williamsburg Community Center, James River Community Center, the Satellite Services Office in Toano, or from your guidance department. You can submit an application by fax: ATTN: Kelley Herbert at 259-5358 or by mail: ATTN: Kelley Herbert, Youth Advisory Council, 5300 Palmer Lane, Suite 1A, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Once applications are received, you will be notified via email or postcard that it has been received. Applications will then be reviewed and you will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews for the upcoming school year will begin in July with selections made by August. Selected members serve at least a one year term starting September 1.
